study abroad
well...i guess the first thing is that i was pleasantly surprised to discover that i'm perfectly capable of surviving without erick, which is a good thing :) i'd say that for the most part, since leaving the comforts of home, erick has pretty much taken care of me all three years of college. this is really the first time i've been independent, on my own, without anyone to take care of me, physically, mentally or emotionally. and i'm doing great!
there have been lots of changes and new situations that i've come across. for one, i have 6 roommates instead of just one. i have an actual roommate that i share a room with. i was nervous about that. but we haven't had any conflicts at all except that i snore....but as living partners, we get along just great.
the whole 7 girls in an apartment thing is also going well. going in, i had no idea how many roommates i'd have or what the living situation would be like but i've been able to adjust fairly smoothly to a full house. there are 2 bathrooms, which alleviates morning rush, but it would be nice if we had a bigger fridge. one medium-sized fridge is not enough for 7 people's food.
i'm also finding i don't really miss madison at all. i was definitely over that campus long ago....i'm so so so so glad i decided to come abroad. i really think it was the best thing i could have ever done. like it just came at the right time. spending a summer in chicago living on my own prepared me really well for coming abroad. i don't think i would have been able to transition as easily if i had come straight from madison. i'm comfortable being on my own, navigating a new city, figuring out public transportation, living with strangers...i've matured a lot just over the summer!!
mentally and emotionally i think i've matured a lot this past year alone. 21 was a big year for me. started out in a back brace in the lowest place i've ever been to living abroad in a historic and cultural landmark of a city....unreal. i think coming abroad has shown me that i want more in life than what i thought i wanted.
what i thought i wanted before - to get married, start a family and have a job and be rich
what i want now - travel more, live independently for a few years, possibly live in a completely new place for a while and omg i have never voiced these thoughts out loud even if its just words on a screen. but talking to people from all over who have different perspectives on life and how it should be lived has definitely influenced me, if only in slight ways so far. like honestly my mind was definitely inside a midwest-esque box before coming here. but there are other ways to live life!!
part of me wants to be responsible and try to secure a job immediately after i graduate. but once you enter the working world, that's kind of it...
idk. so far this whole experience has been so positive and i can't believe i ever had any doubts about it at all!

we're only human
When I was in middle school, I used to put girls like her on a pedestal. I was insecure about basically everything, and she seemed to have it all. I had this constant overwhelming feeling that she was out there living this awesome life while I sat at home essentially watching her live it, through pictures and statuses that she posted. As I went through high school, I developed my sense of confidence and made new friends and started living my own life instead of watching other people's lives. I was happy. I was busy. I forgot about girls like her. Now, a junior in college, I'm living the fuck out of life and having an amazing time doing it. I'm in a great place.
It just makes me inexplicably sad that here I am, completely and totally happy and healthy, and then there she is, poised to be burdened the rest of her life by one mistake. It's crazy. She was someone I aspired to be. It's such a radical change from the way I used to view her. I suppose, in a weird way, it's a mark of my own progress as a person. But it's not fair that someone like me gets to go on and be successful while someone like her has to overcome all these obstacles she probably never dreamed of ever having to deal with. I really feel for this girl.
The caption that she has next to the gorgeous picture of her and her son is elegantly written:
"Sometimes in life, things get messed up. People over think, over analyze, and assume. It's human nature though. We aren't perfect and I'm learning that more and more each day. Everybody's beautiful, everybody's flawed, and everybody deserves second chances. I don't care what you did, how bad you did it or anything. Sometimes we just weren't ready to make it right the first time. We're only human, remember that."Beautiful. Just hauntingly beautiful. The bare anguish and unbroken strength that she conveys in these few sentences gives me the chills.
I wish her and her son the best. I really do. Good luck, Kaila.

Day 4.
Honestly...I don't have any pictures of something I wish I could forget. Why would I take pictures of it? ha.
so this day is a fail...sorry.

Day 3.

AH so I couldn't decide what my favorite show is. So I put 2 shows :)

Day 2.
Day 2 - A picture of you and the person you used to be close with.
One summer day, 6-year-old me decided to be a creep and prowl around my neighborhood, cutting through backyards and trespassing through gardens among my block. Well, I ended up in the backyard kitty-corner from mine because they had a really neat swing-set, and I loved swings.
So there I am, casually swinging on someone else's property, when a girl comes out of the house and sees me. Startled, I bolt out of their backyard and back into my own. Also startled, the girl gets her older brother and follows me into my backyard.
I'm sitting on my patio, panting with the adrenaline of becoming an unwanted, discovered intruder, when I see them standing there. They introduced themselves, and from then on, Clare and I were best friends.
We went to different elementary schools, so we were really only summer and weekend best friends, but it didn't matter. I used to go over to her house without telling my parents, completely uninvited; she did the same. Eventually, if our parents couldn't find us in the house, they assumed we were at each other's.
We'll always be close friends, no matter what. But nothing can replace the wild and imaginative adventures we shared in our youth :]

DAY 1.

Day 1 - A picture of yourself with fifteen facts.
1. I competitively Irish danced for 11 years, and miss it every day.
2. Picnik completes my life...I'm a photography dork and subscribe to the premium version :p
3. Cherry chapstick is my fave. I used to like carmex, but now I think it tastes bad. and softlips doesn't work.
4. If I have to take two pills, I can only swallow the first one. The second one requires applesauce, the only way I can swallow pills. The first time I ever swallowed a pill, I was at a dance competition and basically got murdered and needed a pain pill, and someone's mother yelled at me. She scared me so much that I swallowed in fear, and....boom. it was gone :]
5. I get hit in the head a lot. So much so that I had to wear a helmet around the house when I was small. My mother was rather overprotective, to say the least.
6. My favorite city in the whole entire world is New York. Something about the city exudes magic...like anything could happen, whether it be randomly meeting the person you marry in the middle of Central Park, or going to a fabulous party and running into a celebrity, or just having the best time just...sitting on your front step watching people go by. I would looooooove to live there someday.
7. I love piano. To me, it's the prettiest sound imaginable.
8. Some people are lyrics people, but I'm a melody person. The reason I like music is not because of the words, but rather how it sounds...like the singers voice and the melodies and harmonies and meshing of instruments. Like, someone could be singing about their goldfish swimming in a tank, but if it's a pretty tune and it's sung well..hey. i like it :]
9. Swiss-Miss chocolate-vanilla-swirl pudding is the absolute best food in the universe. Hands down.
10. I have the worst eating habits. The other day, I told my mom I ate an apple and she was literally speechless. "An apple, honey? Like....a real apple? I'm so proud of you!" Ha, give me a cheeseburger over tofu any day.
11. I really like fashion. It's not the designer labels or expensive brands that attract me; I like putting clothes together and accessorizing. Like, a simple belt can make the difference between a lackluster dress and a kick-ass, slimming, going-out outfit. I also lovelovelove thrifting. Some people get freaked out about the fact that the clothes are used, but that's why they invented washing machines. :] There's nothing better than finding that peach cardigan you've been wanting for AGES. At the cheap price of $0.75. Ah. The best.
12. I like little kids. I love the pure, honest enthusiasm they have about the littlest things. And their curiosity. Kids just find joy in the simplest ways and never stop wondering and imagining and exploring. I think this world needs a bit of that joy and wonder, to be honest.
13. Some people cry when they get anxious; some people have panic attacks; I used to throw up. Like I would literally vomit at dance practice because I was so nervous. I also refused to eat.
14. I get distracted very easily. I sometimes wonder if I have ADD.
15. Last, but not least, I'm always excited to try new things. How else would we have fun?
:)

I'm Feeling Kind of Hip Today
This prompt is stolen from Plinky.
Oh my good gosh, I do NOT even know where to begin with this. Since I teach Irish dance to young children on a near-daily basis, I hear funny things all the time. Just today, Elle, a lanky 10-year old diva who is both fabulous and strange, asked someone if she could "blow on their ear." Elle, of course, meant this completely innocently. Which makes it all the more adorable.
Other musings from Elle include:
"I'm feeling kind of hip today!"
"Can I feel your calf muscle?"
And then, after feeling it:
"Oooh, nice. Now will you flex it for me?"
"Please show me a leap. And then break it down precisely."
(A leap, for your information, consists of a SINGLE jump in the air. Not much to break down.)
I could go ON and on about Elle. Another favorite child of mine is Aidan, a true star who is far more mature than her mere 6 years of age. Aidan says lots of hilarious things, but my favorite by far is:
"STOP TALKING! I NEED MY QUIET TIME!"
I should mention that at this time, Aidan was only 4 and a half. What kindergartener is so stressed that she needs "quiet time"?
Ah, to be a child.

the last two weekends.
Two weekends ago:
Friday- We had the Buzz Cuts for Cancer Assembly for the MACC fund and raised over $17,000 which is INCREDIBLE. Jenny got a boy cut that looked so fierce, I can't even tell you. Then, we went to Noodles and ate in honestly 15 minutes because we had to go to the fashion show! Later that night, I went to the Samudra Fashion Show hosted by Alex and Annika and it was honestly amazing! They did such a great job putting it together and it was so fabulous-fresh-fierce-whatever-you-want-to-call-it, I can't even describe it. Then, after, we went to Jenny's house to celebrate her birthday and her hair and it was just splendiforous.
Saturday- Lisa and I woke up at 4:00 so that we could take pictures of the sunrise at 5:30. Unfortunately, we could not see the sun, but there was this really great fog/mist on the lake that worked for my pictures anyway! Here are some pictures from the shoot:
Sunday- I worked on Psych with the gang.
Last weekend:
Friday- ...I have no recollection of this night.
Saturday- I don't really know what I did during the day, but Jenny and I went to Sara Hoeffler's birthday party at Pizza Shuttle and felt semi-awkward because we're not really friends with her friends. It was nice.
Sunday- Jenny and I woke up at 7:15 am to do Pilates. GREAT way to wake up. I realized I need to work out more. Then we made breakfast and I peeled a potato for the first time in my life. We then made grand plans for a dessert party, but I fell asleep for the rest of the day after that. WIN.
Monday- Memorial Day! This was the day of the Gaelic Park feis which we took Emma to, who was the reason I got free registration! It was pouring BUCKETS down outside, so much so that they had to cancel the outdoor section. Luckily, Emma and I are champs and were inside. Sophie danced P.C. for the first time. Emma did her new steps for the first time. Lots of firsts. I danced after Maggie Eileen Doyle. Which was so unbelievably scary. But as the competition went on, watching her actually inspired me and my set round turned out to be my best round. I smiled on stage, which I haven't really done in actual competition since I was 9. And I beat 3 people. WHAT. Then, alas, the feis was over and we drove home, which entailed a scavenger hunt for a popsicle and me laughing so hard I threw up. Priceless. Upon arriving at the Nelsons, Gwen invited us to stay for their Memorial Day cookout. I met some of Emma's friends and played kickball with them, Emma, Everett, and Colm! After an hour, the good ole dad and I drove home. Then, I met up with Jenny and we visited Lisa at her new job at Big Dog. I ordered a chocolate shake, which Saskia made because she works there too! Then we bothered them for awhile and went home.
...WHEW. These have probably been the busiest weekends I've EVER had, but they were so much fun. So. Much. Fun.

13.
13 is a broadway musical about, well, being 13 years old. it has an all-teenage cast and band, and is about a kid named evan goldman who finds his world turned upside-down when he turns 13. with his parent's divorce, his family moves from new york to indiana, and he is demoted from "cool-new-york-kid" to "reject-in-appleton, indiana." to top it off, no one wants to come to his bar mitzvah. in order to become the cool-new-york-kid again, he tries to force his way into the popular kids group, abandoning his only real friends: his new next-door-neighbor, patrice, and archie, a crippled boy with a terminal illness.
amidst evan's strife are the classic middle school/high school plots: 2 girls fighting over a boy, a boy trying to get "sheezy" with a girl, mean girls starting nasty rumors that ruin people's lives, and just good ole' drama!
it sounds corny. and it is. it's filled with cheesy jokes, not-so-flashy choreography, and screechy pubescent voices.
but i loved it. mixed in with the awkwardness were some truly genius moments, like this one (the climax of the entire thing, in my opinion):

evan has just been kicked out of the cool crowd, at rock-bottom, when archie and patrice assure him that it really isn't rock-bottom. people will always knock you down, but you have to rise above them, and "put one foot in front of the other...and just keep walking on."
and evan, listening to them, just has this great aha! moment:
"...I'm becoming a man
Maybe all that it means is
I face the world for what it is
And not what I wish it could be
I'm becoming a man
Wanting everything to fall into place
I swing, I miss
I'll get through this
I almost guarantee
One day I'll be thirty
One day I'll be fine
One day I'll make fun of this dramatic life of mine..."
he finallyfinallyfinallyFINALLY gets it! the whole musical, he's been pushing and pushing and pushing for the cool kids to come to his party so that he'll be cool, and missing what truly matters and what has been in front of him the whole time: life isn't about being 'cool.' life is about learning how to be yourself. life is about learning from your mistakes. life is knowing that - no matter what you do or how badly you screw up - it goes on.
i really, really, really enjoyed this musical. despite its fluff, it was a poignant portrait of what it means to be a 13-year-old growing up and discovering life for the first time. it reminds us that, whether we're 13 or 35, we all mess up sometimes. and that's ok.

musings of a procrastinator.
1) calculus homework. it is unbelievable how much i despise this class, and ms. lucas. it literally is her goal in life to humiliate me every chance she gets. literally.
for example (you can click on it to make it bigger):

anyway.
2) studying for AP Psych. I don't remember anything I've learned. Ironically, this chapter is entitled Memory.
3) writing my supplementary essays for Macalester and Northwestern.
...
this has to be the most upsetting, disappointing item on my list. its december 14. really, stephanie? really? pathetic. simply pathetic.
4) practicing irish dance. i'm going to ireland in 2 months. need I say more?
5) writing my reflection paper that was assigned 3 weeks ago and is due in 4 days.
to top this sorry-excuse-of-a-to-do-list off, i skipped school today, with the intention of completing all of this. F. M. L. in the worst way possible.
on the plus side, i updated my blog layout. the pictures are all from my trip to peru during spring break this year. gorgeous, are they not? i must return someday. after i finish my to-do list.
...i'll miss you, south america.

i miss my childhood.
while creeping on facebook, i saw a girls status that she had just gotten her "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" script in the mail and she was excited about it. i was in that play at the First Stage Children's Theater in 2000 AND 2003, and it has huge sentimental value for me. as a child, i loved going to first stage every summer, and i was so excited to make it into one of the season plays (people PAID to go to these plays!). i loved acting. i loved this funny, heartwarming play. but mostly, i loved the experience i had. i loved going to rehearsals for three hours every night, after school from 5-8 and having dinner with the cast. i LOVED it. it didn't matter to me that i had no lines. when i was an 8-year old baby angel, i just thought it was so cool to have a costume and dressing room and makeup and props and sets and backstage glory. plays are cool, man. and also, at this time, i was juggling irish dance, preparing for the oireachtas. 2000 was a big year for me; my first oireachtas AND my first play.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
i started this post back in october and didn't post it for whatever reason. but since this, i received in the mail....
AN INVITATION TO "THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER" REUNION PARTY!
ha, this is soooooo weird. its like the gods above were listening to my thoughts and answered them. except that i'm an atheist. but that's another story entirely.
so...despite the fact that i really don't remember anyone from the cast at all and i HIGHLY doubt that anyone will remember me...
i'm going. and if it turns out to be awk. and uncomft., i'll just leave. but at least i'll have my old memories.

It's 9 a.m. Really?
My mom has been watching the whole thing from our window and is now screaming about it.
Oh, small town life.
